Who Can We Arrange Cover For?

Our specialist team understands the diverse needs of medical professionals. We can arrange indemnity insurance for consultants across various medical disciplines, including cardiology, psychiatry, orthopaedics, and radiology.

  • Specialists and consultants working in medical disciplines can benefit from our tailored approach. We recognise that each speciality carries distinct risks and requirements, which is why we work with underwriters who understand the nuances of your field.
  • General Practitioners (GPs) are often the frontline of patient care, and we are pleased to provide them with contract certain cover, where usually only discretionary cover is available. We also may work with the MDU for combined clinic policies where appropriate. Giving our clients the benefits of contract certainty, alongside the qualitative support for which MDOs are renowned.
  • Private practice professionals need protection beyond what NHS indemnity might provide. Private practitioners need insurance that fully reflects the scope of their work.
  • Medico-legal practitioners and expert witnesses require specific protection and professional indemnity when providing court reports or testimony. Your professional opinion can influence legal decisions, making you vulnerable to claims if parties disagree with your conclusions.
  • ADHD and ASD assessors operate in a scrutinised field. The growing demand for neurodevelopmental assessments brings heightened regulatory attention. We understand these pressures and can arrange appropriate cover.
  • Doctors treating UK Patients from abroad need an insurer who understands cross-border complexities, whether it’s telemedicine consultations or travelling to treat patients.

What Protection Can Your Policy Include?

The following sections outline the core cover elements and additional benefits that can protect you against the complex risks inherent in modern medical practice.

Core Cover Elements

Medical Malpractice and Professional Indemnity

Enhance Insurance can arrange the policies which form the foundation of your protection. Medical malpractice and REGULATORY PROTECTION can cover legal defence costs and compensation payments for alleged negligence and/or misconduct. Whether facing allegations of misdiagnosis, surgical complications, or medication errors, having proper indemnity insurance provides essential financial protection.

Key Components of a Medical Malpractice Policy:

Cover for Medical Malpractice and claims relating to negligence, misdiagnosis, delays in patient care and errors and omissions.

Regulatory and Disciplinary Defence

This facet has become increasingly important. GMC investigations can arise even from frivolous complaints. It is not unusual for colleagues and peers to reporting each other for various reasons. CQC inspections might flag concerns about your practice. Inquests and tribunals demand proper legal representation, and your policy can include cover for these regulatory proceedings to help defend you through what can be lengthy and stressful processes.

Additional Benefits

  • Good Samaritan Acts protection can cover you when providing emergency medical assistance outside your usual practice setting.
  • Libel and slander cover can protect against defamation claims. In an era of online reviews and social media, even carefully worded professional opinions can lead to legal action.
  • Run-off cover can provide continued protection after you retire or cease practising. Claims can emerge years after treatment, making this long-term protection essential.

Loss of Documents This cover can help protect you if patient records go missing or get damaged. As accurate documentation is critical in healthcare, losing clinical documents could lead to significant claims. This policy can help manage the costs of recreating records and defending any resulting complaints.

  • Public Liability
  • Vicarious Liability – protection for claims made against those for whom you are clinically responsible.
  • Telemedicine extensions reflect modern practice realities. Remote consultations have changed healthcare delivery, but they also pose risks related to diagnostic limitation, technical failures and privacy.

When Defence Unions Can’t Help

While defence unions have long provided valuable support to medical professionals, their mutual model can sometimes limit cover. Certain circumstances, such as past claims, changes in speciality attractiveness, or unexplained non-renewals, may lead unions to decline or withdraw cover. This can leave practitioners exposed at critical moments.

By contrast, commercial insurers offer a more pragmatic approach to underwriting. Previous claims do not automatically preclude protection, and we can often arrange cover for doctors who are unable to secure union membership. Continuity of protection is essential, and we assist with a seamless transition from defence union membership to commercial insurance, preserving run-off cover and maintaining protection for past and future practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need medical malpractice insurance if I only work privately part-time?

Yes. Private practice requires separate indemnity cover, regardless of how many hours you work. NHS indemnity doesn’t extend to private patients, and even occasional private consultations can give rise to substantial claims. Your policy should reflect every aspect of your professional activity, including private consultations, procedures, and any medico-legal work.

Can I get insurance if I've had previous GMC complaints and/or claims?

Yes. A previous GMC complaint doesn’t automatically prevent you from securing cover. Commercial insurers often take a pragmatic, case-by-case approach, considering the outcome of any investigation, steps taken to address issues, and improvements to practice. Many consultants with prior regulatory matters obtain protection through our network of insurers.
