Essential Advice on Moving from the NHS to Aesthetics

How to prepare!

So, after lots of consideration you’ve decided to make the big move from the NHS to private practice, yes? Well done, you!

Leaving the security of a public sector job in which you don’t have to look for patients can be daunting, so congratulations on taking the first step.

To help you on your aesthetic medicine journey, Enhance Insurance has put together some essential advice…

Never stop learning

You may have completed your initial botulinum toxin and dermal fillers course and feel really confident offering these treatments to patients, which is great. But the fact is, the aesthetics industry is seriously fast moving, and you will need to keep up with the new products and techniques to be at the top of your game.

While attending training courses can be expensive, there are multiple industry publications like the Aesthetics journal, Aesthetic Medicine magazine, Consulting Room and the Journal of Aesthetic Nursing that offer fantastic advice and hugely valuable articles to learn from.

You can also attend most of the big UK conferences – ACE, Aesthetic Medicine Live, FACE and CCR for free.  Dotted throughout the year, you should be able to make at least one. Put them in your diary now so you don’t miss out!

Make a business plan

This may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t plan for the future. Despite how good you may be at delivering aesthetic treatments, if you can’t run your business then you’re destined for failure.

In your business plan consider all your operating costs and how these may grow, how much money you need to make for your business to be sustainable, how you plan to reach patients and how you will maintain their loyalty.

Join the aesthetics community

Opening an aesthetic clinic can be exciting and rewarding, but it can also be very lonely. You’ll go from working within a large NHS team who share guidance and responsibility for caring for patients, to being a sole practitioner with everything falling back to you.

Thankfully there are a number of associations and networks you can join within the aesthetics specialty that will leave you feeling less alone and more supported.

With regional meetings, annual conferences, online groups and more, nurses should consider joining the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses (BACN) while doctors and dentists can become part of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM). Both have a fantastic reputation within the industry and are leading providers of the most up-to-date education and advice for practitioners.

Get insured

Whatever industry you’re in, insurance is absolutely essential for all business owners. And when you provide aesthetic treatments, despite all of your intentions to deliver the best outcome, things don’t always go to plan.

Ensuring you have the right coverage in place will protect you if any claims are made so you don’t suffer from significant financial losses or reputational damage.
